Parts of Van Buren County in the dark due to power outage

Consumers Energy Outage Map, June 8, 2019.

VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich.  — Consumers Energy estimates power won’t be restored to more than 2,000 of its utility customers until 12:30 a.m. Saturday – most of them in Van Buren County.

The outages were first reported around 8:15 p.m. Saturday. Consumers says the outages were caused by tree limbs, apparently falling on power lines.

The Consumers Energy Outage Map showed most of the outages to be in northern and eastern Van Buren County, but some were seen as far east as Kalamazoo County on Saturday night.

The outage extends north as far as the Allegan County line, south almost to Red Arrow Highway, west to M-40, and almost to US-131 on its eastern boundary.

About 1,599 customers were still in the dark as of 11 p.m. Saturday in the main power-outage area, with another 711 in a smaller area closer to US-131.

Michigan hotel offers free accommodations for anyone traveling for abortion

YALE, Mich. – In recent months, states across the country have been passing laws designed to make it harder — and in some cases, nearly impossible — to get an abortion.

So Shelley O’Brien, manager of The Yale Hotel in the tiny Michigan town of Yale, made an offer to anyone traveling out of their state for the procedure: Come to Michigan and stay at her hotel for free.

“Dear sisters that live in Alabama, Ohio, Georgia, Arkansas, Missouri, or any of the other states that follow with similar laws restricting access, We cannot do anything about the way you are being treated in your home-state,” the post reads.

“But, if you can make it to Michigan, we will support you with several nights lodging, and transportation to and from your appointment,” the post reads.

It was a bold stance for the mother of three to take in her largely conservative town that’s home to fewer than 2,000 people. But O’Brien said she felt it was important.

“Women should have autonomy over their own bodies,” she said. “If we do not have control over our own bodies, then this is not a free world.”

The Yale Hotel’s Facebook post has since received thousands of shares and hundreds of comments. Responses have been mostly positive, O’Brien said, though she has gotten some pushback from online trolls and others.

So far, O’Brien said no one has taken her up on the offer, though she has a room ready for anyone who needs it. She said she’s calling it “Jane’s Room” — a nod to Jane Roe, the pseudonym for Norma McCorvey, the plaintiff in the landmark Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade.

The offer has, however, been good for business. In the weekend after she made the post on Facebook, she said she made $400 more than the week before.

In the past few months, Alabama passed a near-total ban on abortion, while states including Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and Ohio have passed “heartbeat” bills that ban abortions after a fetal heartbeat can be detected.

Earlier this week, Republicans in the Michigan state Senate introduced bills that would punish doctors for performing abortions after a fetal heartbeat can be detected. The Republican-led House and Senate also voted in May to ban a common second-trimester abortion procedure and make it a felony for physicians to perform it, except to save a patient’s life.

Michigan’s Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has said she would veto bills that restrict abortion access, and a group called Right to Life of Michigan plans to launch a petition to bypass her promised veto.

Border Patrol agent rescues migrant mother, son from attacking swarm of bees

A Guatemalan woman and her 8-year-old son were rescued in Texas after thousands of bees attacked them near the border, US Customs and Border Protection officials said.

A Border Patrol agent patrolling in Brownsville, Texas, Tuesday noticed a small swarm of bees in his vehicle. After clearing his vehicle, the agent started tracking the rest of the bees and spotted thousands of them covering what it looked like “jacket and a bundle,” the agency said in a statement.

“Upon closer investigation, the agent realized the bundle was a person curled up in the fetal position,” the statement said.

The agent yelled at the person to get up and run to his patrol vehicle but realized that someone else needed help.

“As the person stood up, the agent noticed the person was covering a small child,” the statement said.

The three of them were inside the patrol vehicle waiting for an ambulance when the boy started vomiting. Border Patrol officials said the agent decided to quickly take them to the hospital instead of waiting.

The boy and his mother are being treated in a local hospital. Details of their conditions are unknown, but officials said they were admitted in the intensive care unit. They are expected to recover, authorities said.

They are expected to be processed by immigration officials once they are released from the hospital.

Last year, Border Patrol agents rescued a family from El Salvador who was also attacked by a swarm of bees near Rio Grande City, a town along the border and about 100 miles northwest of Brownsville.

The agents used fire extinguishers to drive the bees away from mother, her 13-year-old daughter and her 10-year-old son, the agency said in statement.

The incident comes as US authorities say they’re seeing a spike in immigrants illegally crossing the US-Mexico border, largely from Central America.

For months, Customs and Border Protection officials have been dealing with a growing array of health problems, as they face more families and children coming across the border — a shift from previous years when single adult males made up a large number of border apprehensions.

Immigrant rights advocates have raised concerns about the medical care detainees are getting inside overcrowded facilities, and top CBP officials have warned that the agency is facing a crisis and need more resources to handle it.

3 children dead after truck rear-ends horse-drawn carriage in Michigan

STURGIS, Mich. — Three children have now died after a truck rear-ended an Amish horse drawn carriage.

Michigan State Police say it happened in Algansee Township in Branch County sometime Friday.

All occupants were ejected from the carriage, including children and two adults. Two of those children, ages six and two, died at the scene. Michigan State Police told WXMI a 4-year old later died at the hospital from their injuries.

A 3-year-old was taken to the hospital suffering major injuries. One of the adults, a woman, also suffered serious injuries.

All of the victims were taken to Parkview Hospital in Ft. Wayne, IN and Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo.

The driver of the pickup has been arrested, though MSP is not releasing that person’s name at this time.

The case is still under investigation.

Researchers: Dodgeball is more than a game, it’s ‘legalized bullying’

Most people would call dodgeball a harmless playground activity, but a team of Canadian researchers argue the game is a tool of oppression that can unfairly target students perceived as “weaker individuals,” WFSB reported.

The group presented their argument Monday at a conference organized by the Canadian Society for the Study of Education in Vancouver, according to CTV News.

They claim dodgeball – which requires players to eliminate their opponents by hitting them with rubber balls – teaches students to dehumanize each other and creates unsafe conditions in schools.

“Dodgeball is the only game where the human is the target. No other games focus on it,” study co-presenter Joy Butler, a professor at the University of British Columbia, told CTV News.

“It’s tantamount to legalized bullying,” she added.

Butler worked alongside David Burns, a professor at the Kwantlen Polytechnic, and Claire Robson, a professor at Simon Fraser University.

In an abstract of their study, the trio said the “hidden curriculum” of dodgeball reinforces the five “faces” of oppression — which include “marginalization, powerlessness, and helplessness of those perceived as weaker individuals through the exercise of violence and dominance by those who are considered more powerful.”

While the group isn’t calling for schools to ban dodgeball, they want physical education teachers to closely examine the games children are encouraged to play.

“If one thing were to come out of this it would be for P.E. teachers to look at their curriculum and look for balance,” Bulter told the Washington Post. “And that could mean dropping games and including other activities: outdoor education, fitness, gymnastics, aquatics.”

The researchers also acknowledged their report would be criticized by many who argue dodgeball is just a fun game, but they insist things can be done differently.

Jones homers twice, drives in 5; Tigers beat Twins, 9-3

DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Tigers haven’t given their fans much to cheer about at home this season.

Playing in front of 26,818 fans — their biggest crowd since opening day — the Tigers routed the Minnesota Twins 9-3 Saturday for a rare home win.

“I’ll take exactly that again tomorrow,” Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire said. “Bring all those fans back and let’s give them another performance like that.”

The Tigers had lost three straight and 13 of 14 at home, including a winless nine-game homestand May 13-23.

“We feed off our fans, so today was a lot of fun,” Tigers opener Buck Farmer said. “It has been a tough year, and we haven’t given our fans much entertainment.”

JaCoby Jones, always a crowd favorite with his high-speed baserunning and defense, continued his hot streak at the plate with two homers and a career-high five RBIs.

Jones is hitting .420 with four homers and 13 RBIs in his last 14 games, raising his batting average from .173 to .250.

“That young man has worked incredibly hard to adjust his swing and find a way to be quicker to the ball,” Gardenhire said. “There are times when guys never find a solution, and we know he’s going to still have struggles ahead, but we’re going to ride this as long as we can.

“He’s always smiling and he’s always fired up and that’s infectious.”

Christin Stewart also homered for the Tigers.

“I hope we reminded our fans that we can still be a pretty good baseball team,” he said.

Nick Ramirez (2-0), Detroit’s second pitcher in a bullpen game, gave up one run and three hits with three walks in three innings.

Minnesota dropped to 5-4 on a 10-game road trip that ends Sunday.

“It was kind of an off afternoon for us,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “We really didn’t get much going on either side of the ball.”

Kyle Gibson (6-3) gave up five runs and eight hits with two walks in five innings.

“I felt like it was an OK day, but my mistakes really hurt us,” he said.

The Twins took a quick 1-0 lead in the first. Max Kepler started the game with a walk and Jorge Polanco followed with an RBI double off Farmer.

Jones put the Tigers ahead with a three-run homer in the second.

“That was one of the few bad sliders I threw all day, but it was at the wrong time and wrong location to JaCoby,” Gibson said.

Minnesota pulled to 3-2 against Ramirez in the third. Kepler walked again to start the inning, took second on Nelson Cruz’s single and scored on C.J. Cron’s base hit.

Stewart led off the bottom of the third with his fifth homer, and Harold Castro gave the Tigers a three-run lead with an RBI single in the fifth.

Cruz hit his 10th homer on Blaine Hardy’s first pitch of the eighth inning. He has 19 regular-season homers against the Tigers to go along with the eight he has hit in nine postseason games against Detroit.

“We gave Blaine the eighth and he went out there and challenged Cruz,” Gardenhire said. “He hit it 8,000 feet, but things went better after that.”

Jones hit a two-run homer to make it 7-3 in the bottom of the eighth and the Tigers added two more runs in the inning.

RHP Ryan Eades, called up from Triple-A Rochester before the game, made his debut by replacing Gibson for the sixth inning. He became the first player in major league history to wear No. 80 in a regular-season game.

Eades allowed two hits and two walks in two scoreless innings.

“It was great to see him out there, but more importantly, he threw the ball very well,” Baldelli said. “Your job is to go out there and get outs and he did that.”

After the game, the Tigers optioned RHP Zac Reininger to Triple-A Toledo and called up RHP Carlos Torres. Torres, signed on a minor-league deal on May 26, had a 6.52 ERA in 10 relief appearances last year for the Washington Nationals.

Along with reliever Trevor May, Gibson and Polanco are the only players on the Twins roster who played for Gardenhire in 2014, his last season as Minnesota’s manager.

Gardenhire was pleased by his team’s performance against Gibson, who became a rotation regular that season.

“I’ve known him a long time, and the only way to have any success against him is to make him work,” he said. “We did that by staying in the zone instead of chasing as many pitches as we have lately.”

The teams finish their three-game series on Sunday with Minnesota’s Jake Odorizzi (8-2, 1.96) facing Detroit’s Ryan Carpenter (1-2, 6.23). Odorizzi comes into the game on a 16 1/3-inning scoreless streak.
